Biography

I am interested in understanding how organisms model and infer the physical properties of their surrounding environment. Currently my project seeks to understand how environmental sounds are hierarchically processed and how perceptually relevant features are embedded in the sound signal as it unfolds over time. Natural language research has already identified perceptual cues at varying timescales (phonemes, words, sentences etc.) and our goal is to apply similar research paradigms to environmental sound processing. In doing so, we wish to gain an understanding of what features within environmental sounds are important for forming detailed acoustic scenes as well as developing a better understanding of how the auditory information processing system is organized.
