My research is focused on the interaction between alcohol use and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Excessive alcohol use is a major risk factor for development of Alzheimer's disease. Alcohol use and Alzheimer's both impact the functioning of the serotonin system and contribute to neuropathology. I hope to determine what role alcohol use throughout the course of someone's life has on the development of Alzheimer's and related dementias, and if the relationship between the two is mediated by the serotonin system.
