Research Concentration

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide. Despite many available antiepileptic drugs, many people with epilepsy cannot control their seizures with medication, putting them at higher risk for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Though SUDEP is distributed across all ages and affects males and females, it is more prevalent in males. As sex steroids have been implicated in the regulation of seizures and might account for the sex difference in SUDEP incidence,  my research focuses on the role sex steroids play in the risk of SUDEP using a mouse model of epilepsy.
