Peggy Nopoulos, MD, professor of psychiatry and vice chair of research, Department of Psychiatry, has accepted the role of interim chair and department executive officer of the Department of Psychiatry, effective July 1. Nopoulos, who has additional appointments as professor of neurology and pediatrics, joined the UI Carver College of Medicine faculty in 1994. She received her medical degree from the UI Carver College of Medicine where she also completed residency training in psychiatry and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychiatry.

Nopoulos’ appointment follows the announcement that current chair and DEO James Potash, MD, MPH, has accepted a position at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Reception

All UI Health Care faculty and staff are invited to a reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, in the East Room (Elevator F, Level 8), UI Hospitals and Clinics, to bid farewell to Potash and congratulate Nopoulos on her interim role. Remarks will occur at 4 p.m.

In addition to her research, which focuses on brain development and behavior, a large part of Nopoulos’ career has been spent in the mentorship of research careers for clinicians. She developed and directed the Iowa Medical Student Research Program (IMSRP) from 2001 to 2013 and directed the Iowa Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship, also from 2001 to 2013. In addition to students, she is actively involved in mentoring residents, fellows, and junior faculty members. Until recently, she served as associate director for education in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences where she developed and directed the master’s program in translational biomedicine.

A national search for a permanent leader of the Department of Psychiatry will be launched in the next month.
